Norman Zhou graduated from South China University of Technology with a Master’s degree majoring in Power Electronics. After spending five years in Power Supply Design for Emerson, Norman has spent the last 15 years in his position as Technical Marketing Director for STMicroelectronics, China.

New Wide Bandgap Material Technology and Application Overview

Today’s new wide bandgap (WBG) materials offer excellent features including higher breakdown voltages, switching frequencies and operating temperatures. In addition to these figures of merit, SiC MOSFETs ensure lower on-resistance and cooling requirements as well as less conduction and switching losses compared to traditional silicon devices.

Moving beyond the limitations of silicon technologies, power devices made with new WBG materials help increase working frequency, system efficiency and power density, which is extremely important for applications such as electric vehicles, energy generation/storage systems and also motor control designs.

This presentation looks at the main features and benefits of WBG materials and talks about how they fit in key applications. We will also discuss how to optimize SiC MOSFET drivers for better performance and go over ST’s SiC MOSFET products and power technology portfolio.
